Cf. the opening Mishnah of Pesachim: “Any place into which one does not bring chametz does not need a checking.” But does that mean if there is no place to check that one is exempt from the obligation to check? (more) |

While this wasn’t the first place I’ve seen this, Rabbi Dovid Fohrman in his book _The Exodus You Almost Passed Over_ addresses this point. As we know, the different Divine Names refer to different ways in which we perceive His relationship with us. Pharaoh was used to the אלקים-type impersonal relat... (more) |

Deuteronomy 11:22, 19:9, 26:17, 30:16. I’d argue Exodus 18:20 also.
Can you be more specific which differences you’re looking to be explained? Many of them can be chalked up to grammatical differences in context (ex. your first example is an imperative and a complete phrase, while your third exampl... (more) |

A: What is the difference between Islam and Judaism, given that the Torah is also one of Islam's holy books? Starting with your main question of what distinguishes Judaism and Islam: Judaism holds the Torah as part of its Biblical canon, also accepting the books of the Prophets and Writings (that’s the books of Joshua, Judges, I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the twelve pro... A: Metered water tap on Shabbat I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually think or care about my water meter. It’s more for the utilities than it is for me, anyway. So I’d imagine it’s not merely a פסיק רישא, a direct causation, but rather a פסיק רישא דלא ניחא ליה, direct causation which one does not care. In such a situation, if... (more) |

My brother-in-law is a leftie Kohen. As a child, he wanted to train himself to write with his right hand, to remove the blemish. His Rebbe told him to stop, as the blemishes would be removed when Mashiach comes — not that switching hands wouldn’t remove the blemish, but that there’s no point. Read in... (more) |

Sidebar widget with "useful links"? Is it worthwhile to include a sidebar widget with some useful links for learning about Judaism and Jewish practice and law, such as Sefaria, Hebrew Books, etc.? If yes, what links, specifically, would you like to see? (more) |

A: Groundbreaking disagreement in the Gemara? The main discussion regarding when to begin counting occurs in Menachot 65a.12-66a.15. The discussion is prompted by the Boethusian practice of interpreting the charge of Leviticus 23:15 to begin counting ממחרת השבת, lit. "from the morrow of the Sabbath," as referring to the literal weekly Sabbath, a... (more) |

Grammatically both המתיר and המוציא are in the same form, המפעיל for a generic verb root פעל. Why would המוציא be acceptable as past tense, yet המתיר we would insist is present? Surely the passuk of המוציא לך מים is enough to prove that the form _in general_ is past tense; why should one root behave ... (more) |

What are the responsibilities involved with inciting the Codidactyl with chocolate? As is well-known here, if one merely tempts the legendary Codidactyl with some sugar — especially chocolate! — the dinosaur mascot will begin to run amok. @user8078 The same way we can reconjugate להוציא to המוציא, I don’t see why it’d be a problem to turn מתיר into המתיר. I understood that explanation to refer strictly to in the middle of the phrase. (more) |

There *is* a way to move posts between categories, correct? So if there's a post that someone intended to ask as a non-serious question but which can be asked instead as a legitimate one, we can always migrate it to regular Q&A (with the asker's permission, of course). Question | — |
Why is מוציא לחם more of a problem than מתיר אסורים or מלביש ערמים? The Gemara (Berachot 38a) cites a dispute whether the blessing on bread is המוציא or מוציא. The issue is that the blessing must reflect the past tense; while everyone agrees that מוציא is past tense, the parties dispute whether המוציא is past or present tense. The Gemara concludes that one should rec... (more) |

@manasseh I have not heard of such a psak but would not be surprised if someone suggests that. @Harel13 Even if you're correct, it's not clear to me that a practice which independently evolved, but which bears striking resemblance to an idolatrous practice, is permissible. Why is Shlissel Challah permissible? In ancient times, the Roman pagan holiday of Saturnalia included a practice of baking some type of cake with a fava bean hidden inside, with a prize for whoever got the piece containing the bean.
