I don’t know how this would play out long term, but let the record show that I speak conversational Hebrew, but not technical Hebrew. (more) |

Question | — |
What is our policy regarding using non-English languages in a post? 1. Should we allow users to write questions in non-English languages? 2. Should we allow users to write questions in specifically Hebrew or other Jewish languages like Judeo-Aramaic, Yiddish, and Ladino? 3. Should we require the question to be written entirely in English where possible? 4. In inst... (more) |

Question | — |
Are questions purely about Jews and Jewish History in-scope? On Mi Yodeya, questions about Jews or their history that aren't clearly about Judaism are considered out of scope. Should that be the case here, or should questions about Jews and their history be ipso facto on-topic? Questions to consider, assuming that close reasons unrelated to scope (too broad... (more) |

@AA Maybe off-topic is the wrong label to apply. I'm not proposing that all questions should be closed because one didn't look at every Sefer in a Beis Midrash; I'm proposing that if literally the first link when you search your question provides an answer, it's probably a low-quality question. @Alaychem Even if you only use material in the Pesukim without Midrashim, you can't propose that Yitzchak was too young: after all, it takes a lot more effort to carry logs up the mountain (as v. 6 explicitly says he did) than it does to pile them up (as v. 9 explicitly says he didn't). That doesn't ... (more) |

@Alaychem The easy solution certainly is to assume that the Midrash which says that the Avos kept the Torah before is metaphorical, but if you take it literally, that they kept not only the written Torah but also the oral Torah and even Rabbinic decrees, then I see no reason why a Braisa defining wha... A: Are questions purely about Hebrew in-scope? Speaking personally, I agree with the other posts which propose allowing questions related to these Jewish languages but not related to Judaism as a religion. Speaking as a moderator, I just want to emphasize that the help center mentions that you should do some basic research before asking your q... (more) |

Question | — |
Origin of Three Weeks/Nine Days customs? When discussing the period of mourning leading up to Tisha B'av, the Mishnah (Taanit 4:7) only discusses the "week in which Tisha B'av falls." This is codified even as recently as the Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 551:3), with the Rema ad. loc. commenting there that "we have the custom to be stringent ... (more) |

@Harel13 According to Rashi, the Eigel HaZahav was also instigated by the Erev Rav, and Bnei Yisrael's problem is that they didn't protest. And we see how badly that turned out for them. (more) |

@Dani If it was just the meat I'd agree with you, that their only problem was the way they asked (compare P. Beshalach when they asked for meat with no repercussions). But once you consider the arayos issue, suddenly this turns from asking for something extra to attempting to throw off something they... (more) |

@man (2/2) There's also another critical difference from Photo or Cooking in that it's not really a contest in the sense that there's no competition. If it's a contest, then the natural way to do it would be a separate Q&A forum, exactly the way that they've done so. This is more encouraging people t... (more) |

@manasseh Just to clarify what exactly you're suggesting – If someone wants to see all the posts involved in this contest, they'll navigate to the contest post and see all its entries. If someone just wants to look up questions on the three weeks, they'll filter by the three weeks tag. Is your sugges... (more) |

Question | — |
Why was Tisha B'av chosen as the day of crying for naught, when the Jews had cried previously? >ותשא כל העדה ויתנו את קולם ויבכו העם בלילה ההוא (במדבר יד, א) אמר רבה א"ר יוחנן אותו ליל ט' באב היה אמר להן הקב"ה לישראל אתם בכיתם בכיה של חנם ואני אקבע לכם בכיה לדורות (סנהדרין קד:, תענית כט.)‏ > >"And the entire congregation lifted their voices, and the nation cried on that night" (Numbers 1... Answer | — |
A: Welcome to our new pro-tem moderators! I first discovered Mi Yodeya during the 2016 PTIJ season; I was a senior in high school running the school newspaper looking for good content for the Purim edition and had about zero creativity in coming up with any myself. As I stuck around the site a bit and realized that there actually was more to... (more) |
