Will you help us build our community of learners? Drop into our study hall, ask questions, help others with answers to their questions, share a d'var torah if you're so inclined, invite your friends, and join us in building this community together. Not an ask-the-rabbi service, just people at all levels learning together.

Question | — |
Topic submission thread (Q4 5780) Proposal thread This thread is for submitting suggestions for the weekly topic challenge. If you have a suggestion for a topic, please reply to this question with your suggestion as an answer. A good submission should: - Not be too niche a topic (think "kashrus," or perhaps "milk and meat,"... (more) |

Question | — |
Do the requirements to honor a Kohen require one to honor a female Kohen? Background: There is a requirement to honor Kohanim (Vayikra 21:8; Mishneh Torah, Positive Mitzvot, 32; Moed Katan 28b.27). Among the ways this commandment is fulfilled are allowing a Kohen to make Hamotzi and to lead bentching for those present; in a gathering of people, a Kohen should be the first ... (more) |

Question | — |
Proposal: Weekly Topic Challenge As we’re building up this community, I thought it would be a neat idea to feature a weekly topic challenge, similar to when MY was getting started (see here). The idea would be as follows: 1. A new category, dedicated to the challenge, would be created (analogous to the Writing, Outdoors, Photogra... (more) |

A: Custom Community Name? Another suggestion, in line with all the others emphasizing the "learning together" value: Haskeis, referencing Berachos 63b.12. (more) |

Chabad has a feature where, similar to the Sefaria Linker we already have installed here, any time words in their glossary are detected on a page, a link is embedded where on a mouse-over an in-line explanation of the word appears. (As an example, their [general "Kosher" page](https://www.chabad.org/... (more) |

(2/2) This is based on the unreasonable assumption that upvotes are linear with time, not logarithmic. Maybe the math works better if we model it as a logarithm adjusted to pass through the origin, but I'm not working through that math right now. I'll be back if I'm bored enough to see what happens o... (more) |

(1/2) Just throwing this statistic out there, to explain why weighting proportionately to the population size won't work: Taking the Samoa post as an example, with its score of +124/-1, from a community of over 11,000 users, over 8.5 years since it's been posted. Proportionately to our community of 5... (more) |

A: What content do we want to import from Mi Yodeya? In addition to whatever criteria we choose for wholesale importing, maybe there can be an option, once the linking Codidact and SE accounts thing is working properly, to browse all of your own questions and answers from MY and select the ones you'd like to import? +1 This is a MUCH better suggestion than mine. As the passuk says, "Two heads are better than one." (I'd have suggested Chut Hameshulash but I feel that'd be a mouthful.) (more) |

A: Custom Community Name? Originally I was going to propose a name reflecting the Q&A nature of the site, something like Sho’el U’Meishiv, or Hiskalti (ref. Avos 4:1). But then I realized that Codidact isn’t about exchanging questions and answers; the name literally means “learning together.” To that end, I propose the nam... (more) |

Question | — |
Custom Community Name? For those of us who were or still are a part of the Judaism StackExchange community, you'll know that they don't call themselves "Judaism Stack Exchange" – it's Mi Yodeya. Here, we're just "Judaism Codidact." We are indeed a Codidact site about Judaism, but just calling ourselves "Judaism" is just... (more) |

This is a good start, but what if in my answer I don’t reference any material whatsoever? Obviously if I quote something I should include where I got it from, but is there a requirement to quote in the first place? (more) |

When is a source required? How should sources be quoted or linked? >כל האומר דבר בשם אומרו מביא גאולה לעולם שנא׳ ותאמר אסתר למלך בשם מרדכי > >Whoever says something in the name of the one who said it brings redemption to the world, as it says (Esther 2:22), "And Esther said to the king in the name of Mordechai." --Megillah 15b, from Avot 6:6, from Kallah Rabbat... Question | — |
What is the status of a human-mermaid offspring? Bechorot 8a discusses a species called dolfinim, which, in Rashi's understanding, are merpeople and can bear viable offspring with humans. Let's suppose that merpeople actually exist as Rashi describes them. 1. As per Vayikra 20:15, bestiality is a capital crime. Would a union between a human a... (more) |

This certainly avoids a long-discussed issue we had on MY, regarding if a user can ask a question of the form “I have this great chiddush – does anyone say it anywhere?” Our community has what to share, and I think having a Dvar Torah category would be a great outlet for it, if done correctly. @manasseh Ah, so it was the comma messing me up with the Rambam. I hear the difficulty with implementing the preview; maybe something to put on the back burner for a future time then. Does the API support, for example, adding a button to the menu bar to browse texts to cite, or would that also be too... (more) |
