Comment Post #277000 @Dr.Shmuel There too (in Nedarim) it clearly means “without anything in return,” not “without cause.” Moshe clearly had a desire to teach them; he didn’t give them the Torah for no reason. But he didn’t get anything in return.

Comment Post #277000 @robev Free in the sense of nothing _in return_, not free in the sense of nothing _prompting_ it. Lavan asked Yaakov why the fact they were brothers should mean he should work חנם – but if it means free from motivation, the fact that they’re brothers itself is motivation and thus חנם could not apply....

Question Why is "chinam" translated as "baseless"?
Everywhere that the term חנם appears, as far as I can tell, it always means "without personal benefit": a שומר חנם (Bava Metzia 7:8) watches an object without receiving anything in return; a Jewish slave leaves at the end of his or her term חנם, without having to pay anything more (Shemos 21:2 and Sh...

Comment Post #276960 @AA If the Kohen is already a surgeon, I could hear the Pikuach Nefesh argument. But does that apply to a Kohen deciding his field of study, in order that possibly decades down the road he might save a life?

Answer A: Topic submission thread (Q4 5780)
The Aleph Beis, the Hebrew alphabet. This'd include questions about their formation, halachos of writing them (ex. in a Sefer Torah), or various Gemaras which discuss them (ex. Shabbos 31a or Shabbos 104a).

Comment Post #276983 @Dani But we may very well receive questions about the Aleph Beis, which apparently is so deep that [even Rashi defers to Sefer Yetzirah](https://www.sefaria.org/Rashi_on_Shabbat.104a.12.1).

Question What should our policy be on "trivia" questions?
Should we have a policy in place regarding trivia or riddle questions? Things like: 1. There are exactly nine women in Tanach about whom the passuk relates their deaths. Who are they? 2. What is the longest stretch in the Gemara without mentioning either Abaye or Rava? 3. In what situations can ...

Question What should be our Modesty Policy?
Judaism Codidact is founded on being a site where people can turn to learn more about Judaism. While our heritage has what to say on intimate themes, it also emphasizes the importance of modesty. While the prophet declares that the world only exists for the sake of procreation (Isaiah 45:18 with G...

Sefer Yeshaya, the Book of Isaiah. Thematically relevant due to its being the source of the upcoming seven weeks' haftaros.

Comment Post #276960 @manasseh There's a number of surgeries where not performing the surgery would not lead to a loss of life (ex. cosmetic, dental). Additionally while many situations may at some point well down the line cause a threat to life, at the time of the surgery that's only a possibility (ex. internal inflamma...

Comment Post #276949 Take care with citing Midrashim as to the etymology of names; by this logic you'd come to conclusions such that even Chavah had an Aramaic name (Bereishis Rabbah 20:11), even though Aram wouldn't exist for another 12 generations and Aramaic for another 15.

Question May a Kohen become a surgeon?
A dead body causes the room in which he lies to become ritually impure (Numbers 19:14). Additionally, Kohanim are forbidden to become ritually impure from those who are not immediate relatives (Leviticus 21:1). May a Kohen become a surgeon (i.e. may he choose to go into the field initially), cons...

Question Requiring Outside Knowledge
There's a few different permutations of these types of questions, so I'll put each one in its own category. What unites them all is that they require knowledge of something outside of Judaism; in your proposed scope you may distinguish between each category and describe why you feel, for instance, ca...

Question Are questions purely about the State/Land of Israel in-scope?
On Mi Yodeya, questions about the State/Land of Israel that aren't clearly about Judaism are considered out of scope. Should that be the case here, or should questions about Israel be ipso facto on-topic? Questions to consider, assuming that close reasons unrelated to scope (too broad, opinion-bas...

Question Limitations on "too broad" as a close reason
"Too broad" is currently a close reason. How broad is too broad? - "Cannot be answered in just a few paragraphs" seems too vague to be meaningful, and some questions can be very narrow yet require long answers. - "Invites multiple distinct answers with no way to determine which is correct" – th...

Comment Post #276930 There’s a few cases I can think of where if everyone will die with the status quo, one may voluntarily forfeit his right to life in order to allow the others to survive. But I don’t know if a patient who’d survive with the status quo can forfeit his life to save someone else.

Comment Post #276945 Not a complete answer, but: It’s erasing without intent to rewrite, so it’s Rabbinic in nature. Not all Rabbinic prohibitions are permitted for non-life-threatening ailments, but many are, and a general rule of thumb (there are exceptions) is that a decree lest you violate a Biblical prohibition is a...

Comment Post #276890 @AA Israel is a broad enough topic that I plan on posting it as its own question. I’d have separated Jews and history also if not for the fact that those two categories are mostly synonymous; there’s plenty to talk about Israel not Judaism unrelated to Jews or Jewish history, as your examples highlig...
