@robev By Chametz the phrase used is תשביתו את שעור, and ביעור שביעית is an inference and never explicitly stated (Rambam Shemittah 7:1). Perhaps Mishnaic Hebrew adopts a different translation; certainly on a Biblical level the word is consistently used to mean absolute destruction. (more) |

IMHO: You’re not smelling it because you enjoy the smell. You’re smelling it because you’re taking a smell test. I’d think there’s no bracha to be made. (more) |

Why does the verse state that one should "destroy" Maaser Sheni and Neta Reva'i? Devarim 26:13: >וְאָמַרְתָּ֡ לִפְנֵי֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ בִּעַ֧רְתִּי הַקֹּ֣דֶשׁ מִן־הַבַּ֗יִת וְגַ֨ם נְתַתִּ֤יו לַלֵּוִי֙ וְלַגֵּר֙ לַיָּת֣וֹם וְלָאַלְמָנָ֔ה כְּכָל־מִצְוָתְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּיתָ֑נִי לֹֽא־עָבַ֥רְתִּי מִמִּצְוֺתֶ֖יךָ וְלֹ֥א שָׁכָֽחְתִּי > >And you will say before Hashem, your G-d,... I'm not asking whether you can pronounce the name of the security firm; I already addressed that in the footnotes in my question. My question is whether an orthodox Jew can theoretically use a Divine Name in naming something. You're raising sources that discuss preexisting secular meanings of words i... (more) |

@Aliza For the opposite reason, one of pronouncing names of false gods, as if you're giving credence to them. That's an interesting parallel however, even as it's pronounced differently in those cultures than it is in English (hey-soos vs. jee-zuhs). (more) |

In the context of the security agency, that’s clearly not the intention they’re going for. (more) |

That’s fine that these words have secular connotations, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can use the word for whatever you want. (more) |

Question | — |
May one name a secular object using a Divine Name? Once upon a time, I was on a trip up in north Georgia and stumbled across this gem: a security service branding itself as "Adonai Security, LLC." "Know that you are secure" The tagline proceeds to make a pun in the same vein: "Know that you are secure in the hands of Adonai."[^1] In a simila... (more) |

Corollary to this question: If it's merely a hutra, would I be required to learn a language in which I can say the same concept in fewer words than is possible in any language I currently know? Similarly, is gesturing required when that's sufficient (don't have the source offhand but gesturing can be... (more) |

@robev Re first bullet: I'm simply not aware of such cases; if you can link to cases where it's been done, that would make for a good answer, but adding the halachic bases for it would make for a better one. Re other bullets: More like "override" than "revoke." Say the other Rabbi says "I know Rabbi ... (more) |

Question | — |
Can a Rabbi lose his ordination? Suppose Reuven is ordained as a Rabbi (receives semicha). His teacher, Rabbi Yaakov, decides that he is learned enough and of the right character to serve as a Rabbinic authority and proclaims that he may do so. - May Rabbi Yaakov revoke now-Rabbi Reuven's ordination at a later point, if he sees ... In addition to fast days having unique brachos, also consider the requests made on Shabbos and Yom Tov in their respective central brachos. Some of them have כי אתה and some of them don't, and that's just Nusach Ashkenaz. (more) |

#1 is a bit of an oddball here. For the ones containing כי אתה, it's because we start off with "Please do X, *because You are the only one Who can*." The bracha on knowledge is structured oppositely; "You are the Source of knowledge, [therefore] endow us with knowledge." (more) |

Seeking advice as a chazzan in training As I am training to become a chazzan, a prayer leader, I'm constantly beset by critiques by the community, regarding "you should've done X differently."
