Answer A: Where did Bnei Yisroel get slaves in the desert?
From the battle with Midian alone, Bamidbar 31:35, there were 32,000 captured as slaves. That was only some of the women - they actually captured many more and Moshe commanded them to kill the men and the women who had been involved in sin with the Jews, as described in Bamidbar 25:1.

Comment Post #276521 "One question and its answers" for Sandbox was the only way to do it on SE. I didn't like it there, and I don't like the idea of doing it that way here. Categories are a much cleaner way to do this *on a community where sandbox makes sense*.

Comment Post #276521 That is not to say there isn't a place for Sandbox - if we ever have Code Golf, that absolutely needs a Sandbox, because of the need to get a question *nearly perfect* before anyone starts Replying. But that is not the case in Judaism or most other Codidact communities.

Comment Post #276521 I think something along the lines of (but definitely a bit *different*) SE's "this is a new user, be nice" is really all we need. For a new but serious user, it really doesn't take long to get the hang of how to properly ask a question. The non-serious user isn't going to bother with a sandbox - they...

Comment Post #276504 @DonielF *Does the API support, for example, adding a button to the menu bar to browse texts to cite, or would that also be too complicated to work out?* I haven't looked into enough.

Comment Post #276504 As far as the edit preview, I think that would be a bit of a problem. I took a quick look at the Sefaria API docs earlier, and I am pretty sure there is a way we can force a fresh analysis of the page, which should work with the Preview. However, doing that on every character would be a bit impractic...

Comment Post #276449 @aCVn That is true, but (a) writing our own code to do this would be a lot of work, (b) there are plenty of other features that are helpful-but-not-critical, like preview, character count in comments, etc. that are dependent on having Javascript enabled. Anyone who makes the choice to disable Javascr...

Comment Post #276450 Not just "scripture", which typically refers to the Tanakh (Bible), as in the example in my post, but also the Mishnah (example in Isaac's comment), Gemara (like Bava Metzia 8a that I'm in a class on Sunday mornings) and Halachic writings (example in Isaac's comment).

Question Sefaria linking is now installed
This is a test to see if the Sefaria linking works. @ArtOfCode says just make things that look like references. So I suppose Genesis 1:1 should give me the first Pasuk of the Torah. Let's see...

Comment Post #276442 How about allowing (in general) translation *from* Hebrew/Ladino/Yiddish/Judeo-Arabic/Aramaic into English (i.e., that is typically what people trying to learn from source texts will need) but not from English to the other languages? I suspect (but this is really just a hunch) that typical "Translate...

Comment Post #276395 @AA That wasn't my intention. But I still believe my answer is *correct*, until shown otherwise. *Good* is in the eye of the beholder. Comment Post #276402 This isn't, in my opinion, "distracting". The Tzitzis need to be gathered around this time in order to be able to kiss them in the last paragraph of Shema. But feel free to write a better answer. I will delete mine if you (or someone else) come up with something better.

Comment Post #276395 @AA End result: 1 - I *think* but don't have supporting sources and don't have time to do the proper research right now that this is truly **not obligatory** and therefore not a question of "if a woman fulfills" but rather **nothing to fulfill**; 2 - Feel free to write a better answer - if sufficient...

Comment Post #276395 The difference (but I don't have the solid proof - if someone can provide it that would be great, I don't have time to research it right now) is that on RH it is normally with a Minyan but the obligation - particularly as evidenced by the Brachah - applies even without a Minyan. On the other hand, du...

Comment Post #276395 *Calling out the notes is not required on Rosh Hashanah as far as I know.* - Strictly required, no. If someone is blowing Shofar for an individual or group (or obviously, for himself by himself) outside of the regular Davening, calling out the notes is not needed. But it is a very structured and (I b...

Comment Post #276362 @AA You're right. Not really clear whether I am saying "What categories should we have?" or "Should we have these 2 categories, Divrei Torah and Purim Torah". And I see the responses cover both! I'll have to think about this a bit...not really sure myself.

Comment Post #276362 @AA I like fun. Purim Torah is fun. Done well (and Mi Yodeya did it pretty well), it is a good thing. In addition, unlike SE, we can relatively easily have a real section for it so that the big downside of cluttering the main Q&A *will not happen*.

Comment Post #276362 "Purim Torah" is not an exclusively Mi Yodeya concept - it is well recognized in the Orthodox world. Just discussing this reminds me of some hilarious stuff I've seen locally.

Comment Post #276422 Once it gets done once and saved, if the post title changed it wouldn't matter, as long as the anchor link (muktzah) was still valid (and actually, it wouldn't crash in that case, just go to the top of the Shabbos page).

Comment Post #276422 The links problem could be a tough one to solve. I don't like userscripts - that requires something "extra" from the user - I like everything to be "go to this page and do stuff". Maybe an automagic translation of some sort - e.g., a link of `[Xyz](/wiki/shabbos/muktzeh)` gets turned into `/questions...

Question Dictionary/Encyclopedia of Terms
How about a Wiki-style Dictionary or Encyclopedia of Jewish terms? This could either be a Category or maybe part of Community-specific Help. Instead of each reference to a Jewish/Hebrew/Aramaic/etc. term either being left unlinked (requiring those who don't know the terms to spend a lot of extra t...

Comment Post #276402 When I forget (which happens more than it should), I just gather them as soon as I remember. Pausing to do so might be better in some ways, but if you are in a Minyan and falling behind, that doesn't work so well.

Answer A: When to gather the Tzitzis
> B. Gather the Tzitzis while saying the Pasuk of וַהֲבִיאֵנוּ לְשָׁלוֹם Why? Because the next words are מֵאַרְבַּע כַּנְפות הָאָרֶץ "from the four corners of the Earth". We connect "four corners" of this phrase with the "four corners" of the Tzitzis, which are often called אַרְבַּע כַּנְפות fro...

Question Does a Shochet need to have his knife checked by a Rabbi? If not, why not?
Mishneh Torah, Talmud Torah, 6:14 lists 24 reasons for excommunication. # 20 is: > טַבָּח שֶׁלֹּא בָּדַק סַכִּינוֹ לִפְנֵי חָכָם >A Shochet who does not have his knife checked by a wise man. (generally translated as a Rabbi) I know I heard somewhere recently that nowadays most Shocheti...

Answer A: Can a woman blow the shofar during Elul for herself? Can anyone?
I would posit that there is no obligation of Shofar during Elul. It is a longstanding custom, but there are none of the hallmarks of an obligation, even Rabbinic: No ברכה (blessing) associated with it No calling out of the notes, as is required on Rosh Hashanah Extreme leniency (at least in m...

Answer A: "Jews not Judaism"
I don't see these types of questions as being that different from the others. They're not Halacha or Gemara, but there is still plenty of overlap. There are questions about the Rambam about his Seforim and Halacha and Hashkafa but also about his life - and all those things are connected. Jewish histo...

Comment Post #276375 Not answering (I actually started writing an answer earlier and then changed my mind) since I truly don't have time to do this topic justice - just two points to consider: 1 - In principle "microphone to remote speaker" should be no different from a traditional telephone where the *main* issue is dia...

Answer A: What language(s) should we use for tags?
Having tags in English is important not just for non-Jews but also for Jews who don't read Hebrew well (or at all). But having Hebrew most definitely adds a nice flavor to the site. My recommendation is to have all tags be either English-only or English+Hebrew in a consistent format. For example, ...

Comment Post #276367 Why not? Daf Yomi does that every 7-1/2 years (plus many Daf Yomi groups actually have a Siyum on each Mesechta). That's Gemara rather than Mishna, but the principle *should* be the same.
