Where did Bnei Yisroel get slaves in the desert?

In several locations (example: Yoma 75a.14 ), Chazal mention that Bnei Yisroel had slaves even while they were in the midbar. Where did they get them from? Did they take them from Egypt? Did they take slaves from the nations that they fought with even before they entered the land of Canaan?

From the battle with Midian alone, Bamidbar 31:35, there were 32,000 captured as slaves. That was only some of the women - they actually captured many more and Moshe commanded them to kill the men and the women who had been involved in sin with the Jews, as described in Bamidbar 25:1.

And the torah gives us laws of avadim, including those with debts to pay off, with no indication that those laws are only for later. (This is a weak argument not worthy of an answer by itself, but might be something you want to add in?)

The ones with the debts are Jewish people sold into slavery. Arguably that should not have happened in the Midbar because they had no expenses!

@manasseh it definitely didn't happen in the desert since it only applies when the yovel does.

Some commentaries seem to imply that they owned slaves in Egypt even while they were slaves to Pharoah.

@manasse no, that didn't have to do with shmita

@AA You're right - or at least a quick look at the Pesukim in Artscroll & Rashi all seems to say "6 years, go free in 7" with no mention of Shemitah.
