Welcome to the Judaism community on Codidact!

Will you help us build our community of learners? Drop into our study hall, ask questions, help others with answers to their questions, share a d'var torah if you're so inclined, invite your friends, and join us in building this community together. Not an ask-the-rabbi service, just people at all levels learning together.

Comment Post #276864 Hard to distill down to a few words, which is the way (usually) mission statements work. I am open to suggestions. Or you can post an entirely different Answer.

Answer A: What is the mission of this community?
You should visit Judaism.Codidact if you want To learn more about Judaism, including answers to your current questions and answers to the questions you didn't even know to ask. You should hang around Judaism.Codidact if you want To help yourself and help others expand your knowledge of J...

Comment Post #276839 On the other hand, another local (two blocks away) Orthodox Rabbi, sent in his Shul email: *It is the custom to abstain from listening to any music; whether live or reproduced - including acapella.* and included exceptions for certain things but not any general permission. YMMV

Comment Post #276839 My *general* understanding is that it is "anything with instruments", generally considered to include recorded music but not a capella. However, my Rabbi this year stated (publicly, I sent it to the Shul list): *In light of the unique challenges that so many of us are experiencing due to COVID-19, it...

Comment Post #276800 @AA There are actually a few Nusach Sefard-ish customs in my Shul for historical (60+ years ago) reasons. But until this conversation, I had no idea that this particular custom was not standard Ashkenazi practice. I know Artscroll is not an absolute - our rules are essentially "If it isn't in the Gab...

Comment Post #276782 Brilliant idea: We don't need an extra tag. @ArtOfCode can *easily* add a function (words no developer wants to hear...) to collect the posts based on: *date/time range* + *tag(s)*. Anything 7/15 - 7/21 (or whatever) + (three weeks | nine days) == in the list. No fuss, no muss.

Comment Post #276800 And not quite the same, but possibly related: Our Shul is planning on Eichah via Zoom. Unlike Torah reading (or even Megillas Esther) there are no Brachos or Minyan issues. But I assume it will be with the traditional Trop.

Comment Post #276800 Anecdotally, so just a comment: I routinely read Pesukim with Trop. It comes naturally for me and I find it easier to remember things as well. I know at least one of my Rebbeim from High School (an excellent Baal Koreh) definitely did (and I assume still does) the same. The only place I see a real is...

Comment Post #276782 Actually there would be an additional benefit, of sorts. In addition to going to the Challenge page and seeing, together with the Challenge topic, all the questions with links, they could *also* go to the main page and search b tag *challenge-1* and see everything (in normal Question List format inst...

Comment Post #276782 *Is your suggestion only to make it easier to collect the entries in the first place* Correct. By using a special tag, all OP would need to do is add that tag. The challenge page would automagically show the list - i.e., not "all 'three-weeks' tagged questions" but only (and exactly) every question t...

Comment Post #276782 Putting the challenge entries here would effectively hide them from people who only look at main Q&A, which doesn't make sense, especially if (as is the case this time) the challenge is a timely topic. Hierarchical tags could help: *challenge* as the top level and *challenge-1* etc. below it. A littl...

Comment Post #276782 The problem is "build an index". If you ask me, in general, to build an index, I will figure out a way to automate the process. With a tag, that's super easy. Comment Post #276782 Suggestions: 1 - Include the relevant time/date range in this post, rather than relying on indirect reference to the main post to derive the time/date range. 2 - Add a challenge tag - "challenge-1" for this week, "challenge-2" for the next one, etc. Then there would be no need to link over here, as...

Comment Post #276741 discourage comprehensive, well-sourced, well-written answers. There is just something about my interactions on Mi Yodeya - and what I saw with other people's Q&A there - that left a bad taste. I can't really put a finger on it at the moment. But it was a much less "Haimishe" feeling than some other S...

Comment Post #276741 No specific policies/rules that I can think of at the moment. It seems, to me, more of an *attitude* issue. Answer A: How will Judaism Codidact be better than Mi Yodeya?
I am a middle-of-the-road SE user. Not anywhere near the top, never a moderator, etc. But also stuck around long enough with some specific communities to have (I think) some productive and positive impact. Mi Yodeya was never one of my main sites - I mainly participate(d) on DIY/Home Improvement a...

Comment Post #276727 To that example, it becomes a question of: Was that legitimate - e.g., a doctor answering a potentially life-saving call (I've seen that, and my own Rabbi will make those calls himself if he feels someone's life is at risk) or was it someone blatantly disregarding Halacha. The answer is not always as...

Comment Post #276727 I have heard that there are many Shuls where the talking is far worse than in mine. In organizing Minyanim recently, I had a request from one person to move him to a different Minyan because the Minyan he was assigned had too much talking for him (I did move him and he was satisfied). But is this a p...

Comment Post #276727 The question **as stated** is not about **a specific kollel**. It is "everyone". If the problem is **a specific kollel** then I suggest you speak to the Rav in charge of that kollel. If it is a general "people everywhere" problem then we disagree but at least have something to discuss.

Answer A: Why does everyone talk during pesukei d’zimra?
In my Shul, most Minyanim are kept relatively quiet during Davening when strictly required, which generally means from Baruch Sheamar through the end of the silent Shemoneh Esrei. That is not to say there aren't some problems, and also some talking later in the Davening when inappropriate even if not...

Comment Post #276713 Assuming "without or without" is really "with or without", there are 4 different scenarios here: with permission before death ("normal"), without permission before death (sperm bank misuse?), with permission after death (normal conception, but died before birth of son), without permission after death...

Comment Post #276688 @רבותמחשבות I think a lot depends on the specifics. If the Siyum is a big crowd (e.g., at tables at a Seudah, or seated in Shul) with one person getting up in front of everyone, then it won't be "see the Shiur and/or Chavrusa go through their regular learning process". But in any case, I wouldn't stu...

Comment Post #276677 Which raises a fascinating (to me, in my strange geek mind) idea: Build a custom font from a pair of appropriately licensed fonts - using the traditional Hebrew characters from one together with 'everything else' from the other.

Comment Post #276677 For whatever reason it seems that to get what I consider a "traditional" Hebrew font almost always means a serif (typically Times Roman-ish) font for the English part of the font (or in my terms, 7-bit ASCII, though I know it is more complicated than that).

Comment Post #276677 I agree. I was actually the one who picked the font for the body text. I did notice that it didn't apply to the titles, but I have seen similar problems elsewhere so I didn't bring it up. The problem is that different font designers have different ideas about what a font should look like.

Comment Post #276654 @msh210 I admit that I don't know. The Yom Haatzmaut (and Yom Yerushalayim) extra stuff is only said in my Shul at one Minyan, and for a bunch of reasons (but **not** political or philosophical - I am not in any way opposed to these practices) I have never attended that Minyan.

Comment Post #276666 I suspect that isn't so easy. The ability to browse would require that at least metadata of questions is imported first. More than a comment, less than an answer... Two data points: "New" Haftarah The Haftarah portions for Shabbos, Yom Tov, Fast Days, etc. were all set hundreds of years ago. There are some variations between Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Chabad, etc. though most weeks everyone agrees. However, there has ...

Answer A: How does one pray Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur alone?
Davening by yourself is, relatively speaking, the easy part. I am sure there are others who will come up with more specifics, but people have had to do that, at times, for a variety of reasons: illness stuck in a place with only a few other Jews (or none at all) due to military, business or oth...
