A: Why is this counting not a mitzvah? Many Rishonim give reasons why a blessing is not said by women monthly when counting clean days (eg. she may bleed again and break the count (Tosafot Menachot 65b) or because nowadays we only keep clean days because of doubts how to correctly count Nidda vs Zava (Raavyah 526)) which only apply to the... A: How heavy were the bowls the high priest carried in the Yom Kippur service? While it is correct to catch all the blood of a sacrifice (Zevachim 25a), it is still valid if not all was caught (Tosafot, Zevachim 34b). Additionally, we find the possibility discussed of the blood being divided up into multiple vessels (eg. Zevachim 111b). Presumably, the High Priest utilized one ... (more) |

A: A bracha for the mitzvah of counting The Raavad in his commentary to Torat Kohanim (Behar 2:1) suggests the wording על ספירת שני השמטה. The commentary of R' Samson from Sens there seems to suggest the wording על ספירת היובל. Chizkuni though writes that no blessing was said. (more) |

A: Were there other haftarah readings before the Tisha b'Av readings were set? The original Babylonian haftara readings for these 10 Babylonian sections (3 prior to 9 Av and 7 after) are recorded by Rambam at the end of his siddur as follows: + Mattot -- Joshua 13:15-14:5 (giving east bank to 2.5 tribes) + Masei -- Joshua 19:51-21:8 (division of the land) + Devarim -- Jere... If it's the same commandment happening twice then it would be more analogous to lulav on the third day: even though a night interrupted ... (more) |

@rosends No, those who don't think the day reading obligation is different enough from the night reading obligation to warrant its own shehechiyanu don't say one during the day at megillah reading. A: Shehecheyanu on Purim You've misunderstood the announcement. All the blessings on the megilla reading are for the megilla reading. Each reading is a mitzva and gets blessings. Some communities view the daytime reading as a higher level obligation and say shehechiyanu on it too. There are no blessings on the other purim... (more) |
