when you look in your chumash at the 10 dibrot, you will see 2 sets of trop notation -- one for when you lain and one for when you study. To my eyes, this points to an expectation that even out of shul, you will use the trop. (more) |

I used to daven in a shul which had no talking at all. It simply wasn't tolerated. And the people who attended bought in to that and held fast to the rule. I took it on myself not to talk during davening, beginning to end. I don't always stick to that, but I do often. The absolute nature of the claim... (more) |

Additionally, there are certain parts (like the priestly blessing and kedusha) ... (more) |

A: Why do we kiss the Teffilin at Ashrei? The practice is discussed and a source given here. A full answer would seem to be a combination of the first answer given there from the book Taamei Haminhagim (why the tefillin at that point - because of the acronyms for sustenance created by the words of Ashrei and our associating sustenance with p... Should that just be a comment? I don't want to take anyone's work that isn't mine. (thue question about kissing tefillin at A... (more) |

A: Is the observance of Jewish law/tradition "all or nothing"? Both answers you received are correct. Judaism is a religion of laws and the goal is for each person to follow the rules completely. But that "completely" is changeable. It is well established that in order to save a life, one may push aside other laws including the sabbath. If Judaism were purely "a... (more) |
