A: Did Moshe have free will when he struck the rock in the wilderness? Gittin 60a (as explained by Rashi) alludes to a debate as to whether the Torah was written down one paragraph at a time throughout the stay in the desert, and then put together at the end of the forty years, or was only written down for the first time, in one go, at the end of the forty years (with e... @rosends. As I said, as far as I’m aware the rule you propose would always work for Hashem’s Name. But I think the rule is meant to have broader applications. Consider Bereishit 18:12 ואדני זקן (more) |

There are passages to be said instead of the communal passages of kaddish, barchu, kedushah etc. Is that what you’re looking for? (more) |

@rosends I can’t think of any exceptions to such a rule when it comes to the name pronounced as אדני. But see eg Devarim 11:17 where ואדני האדונים has a patach on the vav and a chataf patach on the aleph (more) |

@rosends I see. The problem is that it’s a bit circular - the vowel on the prefix can sometimes change depending on the vowel on the first letter of the following word. (more) |

A: How is God's name pronounced when there is a prefix? There is a popular mnemonic to remember this (a brief search for its origin was not successful): >מש"ה מוציא וכל"ב מכניס > >Moshe “takes out” but Kalev “brings in” That is, if the prefix is one of the letters mem, shin or heh, then the aleph of G-d's name retains its vowel and is pronounced (... A: Havdallah during the nine days Pretty much every approach you mentioned has its adherents. To give some examples: Shulchan Aruch Orach Chayyim 551:10 rules that it is permissible to drink the havdallah wine during the nine days. Rema ad loc. notes a local custom not to drink the wine, but instead to give it to a minor to dri... (more) |

FTR I don't think anyone on MY has a problem with chiddushim **if they are clearly signposted as such**. Also, if you do post your own unsourced chiddush, you ought to be prepared for significantly more push-back than on a sourced post. (more) |

A: Do the requirements to honor a Kohen require one to honor a female Kohen? Minchat Chinuch 269 seems to take it as a given that the requirement to honor the kohen does not apply to a kohenet. He writes: >וטומטום ואנדרוגינוס כיון שהם ספק נראה דמצוה לקדשם אף על פי שאין ראויים לעבוד וגם אין חולקים בקדשים כמבואר בה' מעה"ק מכל מקום כיון דהם ס' זכרים מצוה לקדשם מספק.‏ ... (more) |
