Welcome to the Judaism community on Codidact!

Will you help us build our community of learners? Drop into our study hall, ask questions, help others with answers to their questions, share a d'var torah if you're so inclined, invite your friends, and join us in building this community together. Not an ask-the-rabbi service, just people at all levels learning together.

Answer A: Software development: halachic type systems
Frame challenge: if we are commanded to continue the work of Creation, surely we must maintain at least the memory of voids to measure our progress against. After all, how else can we fulfill the mitzvah of freeing memory before deleting a pointer, or void oaths which are no longer appropriate? (...

Question May one cook or mix beet roots with beet greens?
TL;DR: Given that the commandment לֹֽא־תְבַשֵּׁ֥ל גְּדִ֖י בַּחֲלֵ֥ב אִמּֽוֹ You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk. appears to prohibit cooking that which sustains life with that which is sustained, may we cook beet greens and beetroot together? If not, may we consume a salad of c...

Answer A: Are there any sources for counting Druze men as part of a Jewish minyan?
One possible cause of confusion: In Israel, Muslim men do not have compulsory military service (and relatively few volunteer), but Jewish and Druze men do; most Druze men in Israel serve in the military. A group of Jews forming a minyan who were not aware of this might well count any man in an IDF...

Question When to say fleishik versus fleishike (in English)
I was recently asked what the difference was between the words fleishik and fleishike, and was unable to come up with an answer. If it were just a matter of masculine/feminine case coming over from Yiddish to English I'd expect usage to be a bit more consistent. My mother suggested that 'fleishik...

Question May Jews bow as a courtesy?
Like many Jews, I have been taught that Jews don't bow; many people trace this prohibition to Mordechai not bowing to Haman. This custom can be further traced to Exodus 20:5 - "You shall not bow down to them or serve them." - while literally talking about idols, the prohibition was extended to mon...

Answer A: If a Zoom minyan reads torah (without blessings, as study), should the reader still chant?
This is one of the places where I see the dictate that "the Rabbi is the arbiter of Jewish law for the local community" kicking in with some vigor -- different Rabbis are taking different approaches, based on the spiritual needs of their community, the advancement of scientific knowledge, and the hea...

Answer A: Custom Community Name?
Why are we here? To study Torah, for some sufficiently expansive definition of Torah. ("This, too, is Torah.") What do many of us do before studying Torah? Say a blessing: לעסוק בדברי התורה (... asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tsivanu) LaAsok B'Divrei Hatorah (acknowledging the commandmen...

Answer A: Custom Community Name?
צא ולמד "Tze u'lemad" -- "come let us learn. Unfortunately, the presence of a non-English consonant is problematic, but may inspire someone else to a better idea.

Answer A: How will Judaism Codidact be better than Mi Yodeya?
@manassehkatz's answer got me thinking that (from the small handful of people who have spoken before me) it's clear folks want Judaism to be more inclusive and welcoming than Mi Yodeya, while at the same time not discouraging the kind of deep scholarship and wide-ranging familiarity with Jewish texts...

Answer A: Categories - Divrei Torah, Purim Torah
I propose a category called "Sandbox". People can post questions and answers here to practice using mixed Hebrew and English, get used to the bilingual tags, make and check Sefaria links, and engage experimentally with any future cool Codidact or Judaism-specific features. It could also be use...

Question "Jews not Judaism"
Maybe the "Jews not Judaism" questions should also have their own category, or a separate tag structure (including date ranges and locations) And a clear division between biography ("Where did the Baal Shem Tov get smicha?" and Jewish History ("What language did 14th century French Jews speak?")

Answer A: ISO: hierarchical tags
Yes yes for hierarchical categories, here and everywhere. A good hierarchy help structure information; just imagine being able to browse and drill down to more and more specific groups of questions and answers.
