Omer counter now live on Judaism Codidact!

+6
−0

As of a few hours ago, an Omer counter is now live on Judaism Codidact!

The counter appears on the right side of the site, and shows the Hebrew date, the day of the Omer, and the day of the week. It looks like this:

Today is:20th of Nisan, 57815th day of the OmerThursday night (Friday)

The counter changes at 8PM every day, in your local timezone, to keep more-or-less on track with the Hebrew date without making resource-heavy calculations and whatnot.
The Omer counter uses the Hebcal API to get the Hebrew date and the day of the Omer.

The counter was implemented by luap42. Thanks, luap!

Nice -- thanks luap42! (I'm guessing the API doesn't know about daylight saving time, as it hasn't rolled over for me yet at about 8:30PM. Not a complaint; I'll check back in half an hour. I'm mentioning it in case anyone else is seeing this and is confused like I was.)

I was about to comment with exactly what @Monica said. As a programmer, I can definitely say that time zones, DST and related issues are very frequently messed up, in systems large and small. If it changes at 9:00, "good enough" since Tzeis Hacochavim is currently between 8 and 9.

Seems to be a bug. 9:08pm EDT, display changed to: Today is: 20th of Nisan, 5781 5th day of the Omer Wednesday night (Thursday) Date & Omer changed, but day of week did not. Windows 7. Identical results with Firefox, Chrome & Edge.

I'm seeing the same thing -- 20 Nisan (so it's rolled over), but Wednesday night (Thursday). Mac, Chrome. (Also, yes: timezones are a pain, DST makes it worse, and approximating the time is just fine for our purposes.)

I've put in a pull request to fix that.

Fixed now. Thanks Mith and luap!
