Will you help us build our community of learners? Drop into our study hall, ask questions, help others with answers to their questions, share a d'var torah if you're so inclined, invite your friends, and join us in building this community together. Answer A: Metered water tap on Shabbat
Measuring is always a Rabbinic prohibition. It is only prohibited to directly measure something, but there is no problem to do an action that indirectly measures something out. See Shulchan Aruch 323:1-2, and Shemirat Shabbat Kehilchatah 29:32. I also don't believe there is a Psik Reisha here, sin...

Answer A: Were Abraham's and Lot's guests the same?
From Berieshis 18:22 it seems pretty clear that they were the same people, as Avraham's guests headed to Sodom when they left. > וַיִּפְנ֤וּ מִשָּׁם֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ סְדֹ֑מָה וְאַ֨בְרָהָ֔ם עוֹדֶ֥נּוּ עֹמֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃ > The men went on from there to Sodom, while Abraham remai...

Answer A: Why is מוציא לחם more of a problem than מתיר אסורים or מלביש ערמים?
I understand that grammatically it is more correct to leave out the definite article, which is why Rava starts out saying that everyone agrees that מוציא is valid. However, we would rather add the "ה" to prevent slurring the words together. For this we would need a source that even with the article i...

Comment Post #280480 The Torah definitely doesn't guarantee free speech - that would require a positive statement, and there is not such statement in the Torah. A better question is if it values free speech, and if there are any sources which are relevant.

Answer A: Why do Egyptian priests keep land while Levites don't get any
Rabbi S. R. Hirsch comments on this (Bereishis 47:22), but really limits his observation only to noting that Moshe was not imitating the Egyptian law: > "Only the land of the priests he did not buy etc." Here we see a complete contrast, which opposes that theory which has become rooted in so many ...

Question Lesser-known Shabbos Zemiros
Are there any printed or audio/visual collections of Shabbos Zemiros which didn't make it into the standard repertoire?
