What are the issues and rules about petting companion animals on Shabbat?
Animals in general are muktzeh, if I understand the basics of what I'm reading.
There is guidance about pets at https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/522415/jewish/How-does-Shabbat-observance-affect-pet-owners.htm.
That page mentions that companion animals have a purpose, namely friendship and pleasure for their humans.
Is it relevant that there are documented health benefits to petting dogs and cats?
Is it relevant that many companion animals will be distressed if they don't get physical attention? There is an exception for animals in physical pain, but that isn't the same thing.
