What is the window of time by which a bracha of praise and thanks to God must be said?
I developed a question while watching the rain last night. Consider this question which I found online:

In that case, the individual had to wait to confirm that what he had seen was, indded, lightning, and he confirms it by the appearance of thunder. But is there a time limit by which he has to have heard that thunder? How long after seeing the thing that demands a bracha must one say that bracha? If the storm is far off, the thunder may not come for a bunch of seconds -- certainly not within the time it would take for one to say "shalom aliechem rebbi umori".
I have heard that a person can say asher yatzar as long as he still feels the relief after using the washroom. Bentching has to be said within (IIRC) 72 minutes of finishing eating.
What is the rule for establishing a rule for other events that call forth a bracha? And is there any concern of heisach hada'at? If I, while waiting for the thunder, focus on something else, and "forget" the lightning, is there a problem?
