Comment Post #285033 I'm glad to hear that you're attempting to have broader inclusion here. That's one of the biggest flaws of MY in my opinion. I'm Orthodox myself (and prefer not to define myself as Modern Orthodox though some might see me as such), but also get frustrated seeing the super-Orthodox members over there ...

Comment Post #285033 (4) I'm not posting this to be 'that disgruntled ex-member (in fact, I never deleted my account) coming back to flame everything'. I'm not mad at the site, just a bit sad. Don't take this the wrong way. I'm not mad at anyone in particular, nor do I think there was some conspiracy to make the site thi...

Comment Post #285033 (3) On that note, during the summer, a friend who's doing his MA in archeology explained that one of the reasons he decided to major in his BA in geographical history instead of archeology a decade ago was because when he did his student excavations, he was sent to a site where the veteran students a...

Comment Post #285033 (2) I started out on Mi Yodeya about three years ago, around the time you left/were kicked out, so I don't have that sense of betrayal in terms of the site like some of the older users, but I also don't really know how the site gained popularity. But I became frustrated by some things, such as the co...

Comment Post #285033 (1) Hi and Shanah Tova [pardon for the long post split into parts; I'm not posting this as answer both because it's not an answer and because I expect it will be downvoted, see below]. I haven't been here in quite a while. If I'm not mistaken, I had joined the Judaism Codidact before it even had a na...

Comment Post #279800 @DonielF More to the point, you probably know more about calendars than I do. It was my impression that the comparison made by UCA was of a "perfect" Julian calendar, meaning - when it was first started, before shifts and leaps were made. Which is why I also thought that the Julian could still be com...

Comment Post #279757 @rosends The version of the story I'm familiar with is that the Greeks did, in fact, loot the Temple. The Menorah used then was a temporary one made out of torches held aloft somehow (perhaps by kohanim, at least part of the time).

Comment Post #279737 We had something a little similar in shul once. The bar mitzva teacher of a non-religious kid had gotten the haftarot mixed up (there was some sort of special haftarah that shabbat, perhaps מחר חודש?) so to not embarrass the kid, they let him read the haftarah he prepared. Most of the people in shul ...

Comment Post #279469 @DonielF Thanks. Yes, that's a good question. It seems to me that Yaakov saw greatness in Efraim and gave him the better blessing, but on the other hand, that may have been because Yaakov literally saw into the future and saw multiple leaders chosen from Efraim - Yehoshua, Avdon ben Hillel, Yerov'am,...

Comment Post #279430 @curiousdannii, thanks for the tip. And yes, from what I've gathered, these are all missing from the LXX - there are many others, but these are the ones that had Talmudic era texts that seemed relevant to my theory on the subject.

Comment Post #279314 very central to Jewish beliefs, which in my mind raises a red flag as to what went on in the minds of the authors of the Septuagint. This is actually makes me optimistic that I'll find similar stances (about the importance of these verses, as opposed to removing them) in the Talmud and Midrash.

Comment Post #279314 @curiousdanii, I commented yesterday on the answer below that there's a chance that the sages referred to the differences in an inexplicit manner, as there's evidence that they inexplicitly referred to other parts of the Septuagint. As long as there isn't yet a comprehensive answer that examines this...

Comment Post #279335 @robev Was David fully king at the point or only king-in-waiting/next-in-line? He was only crowned by Yehudah after Shaul died and only crowned by Yisrael after the death of Ish Boshet, after all. Was the anointing by Shmuel the חלות of the crowning or the official ceremony? Secondly, shouldn't this ...

Comment Post #279329 @user8078 No, chas v'shalom, I wasn't hinting you were ignorant. I added it as a helpful comment. I myself only discovered the essay a couple of months ago. Comment Post #279329 Rabbi Reuven Margaliyot wrote a short essay called "חכמי התלמוד ותרגום השבעים" (The Talmudic Sages and The LXX). Comment Post #278964 @MonicaCellio after some thinking, I would say that aderabah, why not tell Noach to build a ship and not an ark and to set sail to Yisrael? Comment Post #278731 "things like that" may include something that may otherwise be considered a half-finished idea for a DT, like: the geo-political ramifications of the War of the 4 & 5 Kings, but in this section would simply be that idea, standing on its own, without the need of some Torah-based, moral twist or chiddu...

Comment Post #278731 @msh210 well I don't know what would be considered "edge cases" here, but I'll try to give some examples. Comment Post #277849 @msh210 sorry. I'm looking for the meaning of the name. If it's a short form of Dodvahu, it means that David means Dod (friend) of Hashem.
