@rosends The version of the story I'm familiar with is that the Greeks did, in fact, loot the Temple. The Menorah used then was a temporary one made out of torches held aloft somehow (perhaps by kohanim, at least part of the time). (more) |

We had something a little similar in shul once. The bar mitzva teacher of a non-religious kid had gotten the haftarot mixed up (there was some sort of special haftarah that shabbat, perhaps מחר חודש?) so to not embarrass the kid, they let him read the haftarah he prepared. very central to Jewish beliefs, which in my mind raises a red flag as to what went on in the minds of the authors of the Septuagint.
